About us
Dyson's products operate at the cutting edge of engineering, integrating complex technologies to deliver leading performance and world-class reliability. As we integrate an ever-increasing number of these technologies into our products, the management of the associated complexity becomes key to the success of the project.
About the role
The Technical Lead is a key product leadership position in the Project Leadership Team, partnering the project Design Manager and taking ownership of the overall product technical delivery.
Technical Partner to the Design Manager – Act as the main point of contact between engineering and category teams for high level product specification and performance discussions. This will involve regular communication with Design Managers, Heads of Category & Category Directors
Ensure Appropriate System Ownership – Drive a functional breakdown of product architecture and ensure the allocation of system ownership/accountability is clear and appropriate. Highlight any interface ambiguities and make ownership recommendations.
Ensure Balanced System Requirements - Focus on balancing specs & system performance to deliver the optimum product solution to the DM, this may involve system modelling and/or simulation and associated trade-off discussions and stakeholder alignments
Agree Milestone Deliverables & Timelines - Work closely with the DM/PM to ensure the technical deliverables at each milestone are appropriate and the delivery timelines are realistic. Work with engineering leads to ensure clear objectives are set for each build and the build/verification plan allow for the meeting of agreed engineering goals
Technical Leadership - Agree ownership of technical work packages. Agree and communicate engineering deliverables for each sprint/build of the project. Directly lead engineering teams on the delivery and resolution of key, complex work-packages.
Lead Technical Reviews - Compile and chair the engineering sections of Technical Reviews
Advise on Technical Readiness to Pass Milestones - Comment on the technical readiness of engineering deliverables at each milestone based on agreed maturity indicators as per the product creation framework
Be Aware of Overall Project Status - Attend the DM's RDD cross team meeting and maintain a general awareness of the project’s status regarding time, spec, cost and quality
Ensure High Quality Technical Reporting - Periodically review and report status of Engineering specs, FMEAs and Problem Reports – focus on risk/issue allocation, prioritisation & ensure proposed solutions are appropriate. Consolidate and contribute to DM's regular project status reporting
Chair Engineering Cross-Teams - Chair regular cross team meetings to drive alignment across Engineering teams – PMs will assist with agenda/minutes etc.
Develop New Ways of Working - Ensure any new models, simulation tools, processes, designs, results etc. are well documented so they may be easily re-used in future projects
Champion Platforming Opportunities – Wherever practicable, ensure that engineering systems are developed to offer platforming opportunities for future products. Become an expert in the Category product roadmap to effectively identify such opportunities
Mentor talent and junior technical leads
