Overall purpose of the role

This is a junior position with the Design team for esteemed imprint, William Collins and 4th Estate. We are looking for someone with knowledge of design systems who is keen to take on a position in which they can learn and grow. The Junior Designer will be responsible for designing book covers and artwork for marketing campaigns across various William Collins and 4th Estate titles. We are open to those with some design experience or those looking for their first role in this field for publishing.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating artwork for various book formats including, Audio, Film/TV partnerships and book covers

  • Designing and creating design assets for the team to use in sales and marketing

  • Create new, innovative and market-leading design concepts for a range of titles across all genres

  • Be proactive in looking for fresh design solutions, new illustrators and new formats

  • Assist with managing budgets for design campaigns

  • Organise and direct photography as required

  • Liaise with the design team and editorial directors regarding deadlines and finishes to ensure cover proofs and approved final jackets go to press on time

  • Attend weekly design meetings to discuss feedback and implement any changes to designs put forward by the team

  • Working to build the brand of the William Collins and 4th Estate imprint

Person Specification

  • Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Design Degree or equivalent

  • Experience in cover design or packaging desirable but not necessary

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to carry out picture research and clearing of images

  • A love of design and books

  • Ability to multitask, work on own initiative and keep to deadlines.

  • Attention to detail

  • Team player
